Wrap It Up Right: Recycle Your Holiday Paper
Did you know Americans use 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper annually, mostly occurring during the holidays? Producing this amount burns around 17,000 barrels of oil and releases approximately 16 million pounds of CO2. Unfortunately, many wrapping papers, like shiny, metallic, or glittery ones, aren’t recyclable because they’re lined or made with plastic, as a result, about 2.3 million pounds—half of the wrapping paper used—ends up in landfills after just one use.
This holiday season, recycle your wrapping paper, bows, and other items sustainably. Check out the Fitchburg Holiday Recycling Guide for tips on recyclability and alternatives to reduce waste even further!
Chill Out & Skate Locally
Fitchburg — McKee Farms Park, 2930 Chapel Valley Road, offers an outdoor ice rink—bring your own skates! Night skating is available with lights that stay on for one hour and can be reset. Lights turn off at 10:00pm. Check here for ice condition updates or rink closures.
Verona — Century School Park, West Verona Avenue, offers a new ice rink at an affordable admission price for residents ($2) and visitors ($5). At the park shelter they’ll offer concessions including hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks. BYOS - aka bring your own skates!
Rink Hours:
Thursdays: 4-8 p.m.
Fridays: 4-9 p.m.
Saturdays: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sundays: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This week’s maker feature is Peter Borkowski, creator of Uncarved Block, LLC.
Uncarved Block LLC is dedicated to creating custom furniture that stands the test of time. My journey began as a child in the park district woodshop. This led to working in other shops honing my skills and craftsmanship.
